The Meaning of Bilum
A bilum is a traditional woven string bag from Papua New Guinea, but its significance goes far beyond its practical use. Bilums are cultural artefacts rich with meaning - used to carry babies, firewood, food, and worn during ceremonies. In Tok Pisin (Pidgeon English), the word bilum also means womb - bilum bilong baby - reflecting its role as a symbol of life, nurture, and protection.
Woven primarily by women using fibres from local plants, the process of creating a bilum is slow, intentional, and deeply relational. Weaving is passed down through generations, connecting women, families, and clans through shared practice and knowledge.
At The Bilum Way, we draw on the deep cultural meaning of the bilum as a metaphor for connection, healing, and identity. Just as each bilum is carefully crafted thread by thread, our work weaves together the strands of culture, wellbeing, story, and self-awareness, creating space for reflection, growth, and transformation.

I created The Bilum Way because for a long time, I thought healing meant fixing myself. Working harder. Hiding the mess. Pushing through the pain to prove I was strong.
But over time, I’ve learnt that we’re not broken - we’re just carrying too much. Generations of stories, expectations, and trauma. All held quietly in our bodies, in our hearts, in silence.
What we truly need is a safe space to come home to ourselves. To rest. To be seen. To sit in circle where our stories are honoured.
That’s what The Bilum Way is all about. Healing with culture. With community. With care.
